Thompson has worked in a television newsroom for nearly 30 years, starting at an ABC affiliate in Gainesville, Fla. Thompson said that winning an Emmy for Best Television Weathercast was a wonderful feeling.
“It was my first time entering the contest, so I was quite surprised to have first been nominated, then to have won,” Thompson said. “I have a lot of respect for all of the television meteorologists in Michigan, so I am honored and flattered to have been chosen ‘best’.”
Thompson has had many memorable experiences since joining WWMT, and being promoted to chief meteorologist is just one of his many favorites. Even more so than his experiences at the station, Thompson credits the friendships he’s formed with those he’s worked with over the years as something he’ll always hold with high regard.
“I've had the privilege of working with great people who are consummate professionals and I'm lucky to be able to still call them friends,” Thompson said.
Thompson credits his father’s love of news as the reason for why he chose to pursue broadcast journalism. His father was a church minister, so Thompson experienced the power of the spoken word early on. As a high school student, Thompson would (secretly) read newspaper stories aloud as if he were the local television news anchor. As a college student, he aspired to be the news reporter to take the place of Walter Cronkite.
