Western Michigan University news and update highlights for February 28 - March 6, 2014. This week's campus photo features the first male dormitory on campus, Vandercook Hall.
Henry B. Vandercook Hall for Men was dedicated on October 19, 1940 as a men's dormitory. The five-story building has roughly 44,475 square feet of space. Vandercook cost $285,000 and could accommodate 215 students. It included kitchenettes and bathrooms on each floor—and even a barbershop. The building was most recently used for fraternity activities.
Henry B. Vandercook was instrumental in the establishment of Western State Normal School. After being elected in 1900 to the State House, he led a movement and, eventually, a bill to passage that paved the way for Western Michigan University. Known as the 'Father of Western,' Vandercook originally rallied for the school to be established in Grand Rapids, his home town.
