Western Michigan University news and update highlights for June 27 – July 3, 2014. This week’s campus photo features Sorensen Courts, which will host the 2014 USTA Zonals Event from July 3 - 7. The USTA Zone Team Championships is a five-day team tennis competition emphasizing both singles, doubles, and mixed doubles play against other section teams with match results counting for National and Midwest Section rankings. Sorensen Courts includes two sets of courts, upper and lower. The upper courts are controlled by the Student Recreation Center, and the lower courts are controlled by Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. From 1950 to 1972, Raymond “Hap” Sorensen (BS ’32, Education & Human Development) coached men’s tennis to 14 MAC Championships including 11 straight titles. An associate professor and alumnus of WMU, Sorensen was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.
