Western Michigan University news and update highlights for June 20 – 26, 2014. This week’s campus photo dates back to April, 1954, and features students playing a game of golf with Kanley Chapel in the background.
In the early 1950s there were several property acquisitions west of the railroad tracks, among them was the Arcadia Club House from the Arcadia Golf Course. It was a 9-hole course located on the farm land surrounding The Oaklands. The Club House was renovated in 1948 to provide a dining room and faculty club rooms, and as the Arcadia Cafeteria, it served West Campus for many years.
But did you know there were two golf courses on campus? The Gateway Golf Course was located along Vande Giessen Road and remained in operation through the early ‘60s.
