With Fall nearly over, hundreds of students have been celebrating Fall Into the Streets—and serving the surrounding communities at the same time.
Fall into the Streets provides the opportunity for first-year students, their student co-facilitators, and their primary instructors to leave the classroom and give back to the Kalamazoo and Portage areas. This year there were a total of 35 different groups that participated: 25 First Year Experience classes and 10 Registered Student Organizations.
Fall into the Streets is a collaborative effort through the Student Activities & Leadership Programs office (SALP) and the First-Year Experience office. Its purpose is to support the learning objectives of First-Year Experience courses—one of the key aspects being service learning through co-curricular activities.
Some of the organizations where students volunteered this year included the Edison Neighborhood Association, Friendship Village Kalamazoo, the Kalamazoo Farmer's Market, and the City of Portage.
"The students were able to see a different part of Kalamazoo that they wouldn't normally visit," an FYE instructor said. "It certainly served as a good connection to the Kalamazoo community."
