Western Michigan University news and updates from around the web for March 29 - April 4, 2013. This week's image features the Western Michigan University seal.

The seal was adopted in 1957, when WMU officially became a University. WMU art professor John Kemper sketched out the seal on the back of his ID card. The seal has four basic components: Five stars that symbolize the main academic units in existence in 1957 (Applied Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Graduate Studies); a tree signifying the University's continuing growth; a stone arch symbolizing the gateway to knowledge, the missing stone represents room to grow; and a pyramid, which pays homage to WMU's true purpose—enlightenment. In 2003, the seal was altered for the centennial celebration, adding an outline of historic East Campus and Prospect Hill. Learn more here.
