Helm Wins Vocal Competition

Helm Wins Vocal Competition
A Western Michigan University Student took first place in the Opera Grand Rapids' Annual Collegiate Vocal Competition in mid April. A record number of students entered the competition—only nine made it the the final round, and Chelsea Helm of WMU, soprano, won.

The competition is open to students at Grand Rapids' area colleges and universities, to give them a professional platform to compete, perform, and gain valuable feedback. This is the first time WMU has been invited to the competition.

The competition is coordinated by West Michigan's only professional opera company, Opera Grand Rapids, which has been producing world-class opera in West Michigan since 1967.

Helm is also involved in a vocal group with other WMU students— The Four Corners Vocal Jazz Quartet includes Gold Company members and is currently recording their debut album.
