Western Michigan University news and updates from around the web for April 12-18, 2013. This week's campus photo features Walwood Hall.

Once known as the Student Union, Walwood Hall was completed in 1938 and has roughly 61,224 square feet. Over the years the building has served many purposes, including the offices for the Western Herald, but currently houses the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, University Relations, the Graduate College, and the Office of the Vice President for Research, among others. The second floor of the building once contained a ballroom, the site for many dances, performances, and discussions. The first floor contained a snack bar and a cafeteria.

Located on WMU's East Campus along Oakland Drive, the building was originally constructed for the Student Union and a dormitory. In the early 1990's, the building was renovated to hold some of the current offices located within it. Today, few students—except for the occasional graduate student dropping off a thesis, or the Bronco Connection Center Student Fundraisers—pass through the building. It continues to hold several important historical artifacts, among them are:
  • A trolley bench salvaged from the WMU Normal Railroad (in service from 1908-47) in the west lobby
  • A plaque listing the presidents of the Women's League (later known as Associated Women Students) from 1913- 1963 in the Bertha Davis room
  • An 'Honor Roll' listing all staff, faculty, students, and alumni who served in World War II, also in the west lobby
