Western Michigan University news and update highlights from around the web for May 10 - 16, 2013. This week's photo features The Frontispiece of a medieval manuscript, on display in Walwood Hall, belonging to the Medieval Institute. The Medieval Institute at Western Michigan University was established in 1962 as a center for instruction and research in the history and culture of the Middle Ages. Its pioneering function then was to introduce the first Master of Arts in Medieval Studies offered at a state-supported university in the United States. Today, WMU remains one of the few public institutions in this country with an interdisciplinary MA in Medieval Studies.

The Institute’s reputation primarily rests on its annual International Congress, the largest annual professional meeting in the field; Medieval Institute Publications, which has published more than 200 books and journals since 1964; and its academic programs. The Institute includes: The Center for Cistercian and Monastic Studies, The Gründler Book Prize, The Cornelius Loew Lecture, and The Richard Rawlinson Center for Anglo-Saxon Studies and Manuscript Research

In mid-May, more than 3,000 of the world's leading authorities on the Middle Ages were at WMU for the 48th International Congress on Medieval Studies. Please click here to learn more about the Medieval Institute.
