Western Michigan University news and update highlights for August 16 - 22, 2013. This week's campus photo features the welcome area in Moore Hall. Dedicated in 1962, Grace and Mary Moore Hall has five floors and was originally constructed as a women's dormitory. Grace and Mary Moore were sisters and longtime WMU Staff members. Grace operated the campus school lunch room and Walwood Union food services until 1940. Mary taught home economics from 1911- 47.
From the 1963 Brown & Gold yearbook:
With freshly painted doors opened and plaster still drying, WMU women moved into the recently constructed Moore Hall. From the beginning the girls were determined to have the grass grow on the lawn and not under their feet. They planned a busy schedule of activities which included an Honors Dinner for those women who attained a 3.0 average in the fall semester. Following the pattern set by other residence halls, Moore became very active in all campus events. The girls of Moore took a step in the right direction academically this year by sponsoring an open-house for the University faculty.
Today, Moore Hall is used for classrooms and offices, and houses the Department of Anthropology. The image above shows the current design and decor for the department's welcome desk in the lobby area of Moore Hall.
