A recent list of National Merit Semi-Finalists included 26 students from the Southwest Michigan Region—17 of which are enrolled in WMU's Academically Talented Youth Program at some point in their academic career.

The Academically Talented Youth Program (ATYP) at Western Michigan University's Lee Honors College is designed for middle and high school students who are highly gifted in math and/or language arts. The program begins to identify students in sixth grade and enrolls them in seventh or eighth grade. Once enrolled, students are provided with curriculum at the rate and depth that meets their ability. Essentially, students have the opportunity to take classes at WMU from college professors before they graduate from high school. As a result, their classes and curriculum are at a level that is challenging and allows students to advance their educations.
