Western Michigan University news and update highlights for October 4- 10, 2013. This week's campus photo features the 1963 Homecoming court. According to the 1964 Brown & Gold Yearbook:
The theme of the 1963 Homecoming was the “Fabulous Fifty States,” with floats, decorations, and activities centering around one of the states. The week began with the Queen’s Coronation on Monday evening, October 14. Full schedule activities began on the 18th.
Homecoming activities got into full swing Friday, October 18, as classes were dismissed at 2 p.m. Students were dressed in weird apparel for the day. The Jazz Concert started at 2:30. That evening there was a Snake Dance, but the bonfire was canceled due to dry weather, though, ironically, it rained on Saturday. A Hoe Down Dance finished the first big day.
On Saturday, the parade and the football game were somewhat wet activities, but spirits were not dampened. The victorious game made the weekend complete with Western over Kent State 26-12. The Homecoming Dances featured the orchestras of Ralph Flanagan and Woody Herman.
The Queen, Mary Ann Dietrich, and her court: Ann Doele, Sandy Vack, Carol Whitco, and Diane Ishii are pictured. To view more of the 1964 Brown & Gold yearbook, please click here.
