Improving Mobility
A group of professors at Western Michigan University have won a grant from the National Institutes of Health to redesign white canes used by people who are blind or who have low vision.

Dae Shik Kim and Robert Wall Emerson, associate professor and professor, respectively, from the Department of Blindness and Low Vision Studies, and Koorosh Naghshineh, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, will study how to improve the design to better detect obstacles and drop-offs in the walking environment.

The three year project will also explore new usage techniques for the cane that will better help to detect obstacles.
