While on campus, new students will learn about college life. They will tour campus, take placement tests, meet with advisors, have their photos snapped for their Bronco ID cards, and much more.
Students will also learn about the resources and services available to help them succeed. Registered Student Organizations and groups from across campus will be on hand to tell new students about the many ways to get involved on campus.
This year, FAST (the Future Alumni Support Team) and the Bronco Connection Center are stepping up their presence at orientation to educate new Broncos about great ways to get involved, build a great resume, and possibly even earn a paycheck at the same time.
The Bronco Connection Center employs a team of Student Alumni Ambassadors who connect with alumni over the phone or at events to inform them of changes on campus and to solicit pledges and donations that directly impact students.
“It’s a lot of hard work, but you get so much out of it,” says Stas Sulewski, a former Student Alumni Ambassador. “Everyone there is so dedicated to helping you grow as a person, and the whole time you’re helping out the students you share a classroom with every day. It’s incredibly rewarding.”
In addition to providing a constructive work environment, a variety of opportunities to get involved with alumni activities are available for students.
FAST, which has evolved from the Student Alumni Association, has also been recruiting students to be a part of the fun. A registered student organization, FAST offers leadership opportunities for students in social responsibility, professional networking, event coordination, and public relations. Taylor Sova and Gabby Lober are current WMU students who have both moved up the ranks in FAST to become Executive Board Members for the organization.
“We want to produce well-rounded alumni,” says Lober.
“We provide opportunities for growth,” Sova added. “Being involved also looks really good on a resume, and students can also network with people from majors different from their own.”
Additionally, FAST is offering a new opportunity for young alumni to mentor students pursuing the same degree. The RSO is comprised of several committees including outreach, student philanthropy, and alumni.
“We prepare students to make the transition into becoming alumni,” says Sova.
