Koty Neelis (BA ’11, Telecommunications & Information Management) was recently featured by the Kalamazoo Gazette for the popularity growing around her comedic writing talent. Neelis is a Michigan based writer who treats all french fries equally; according to her bio on Thought Catalog. Neelis is known in the writing community for having a sense of humor to accompany her articles, but also has a knack for writing stories that have a way of hitting home for readers.

Neelis is a writer (and recently promoted to producer) for thoughtcatalog.com, an experimental media company based out of New York City. Some of her humor based articles include titles such as Just in Time for Valentine’s Day: Hidden Valley Ranch Scented Candles and 13 Signs Your Strongest Relationship is with Your Netflix Account. Some of her other articles are 19 Ways to Brighten Your Mom’s Day and The Struggle with Trying to Repair the Lost and Broken. Neelis currently has 63 posts on the website, but her writing isn’t confined to one place.

Neelis is also a writer for Matador Network, and she recently posted a submission that was the most popular article in the history of the website. Her article, titled ‘10 Signs You Were Born and Raised in Michigan’ received nearly one million views in the first 10 days of being posted. The article includes familiar phrases and activities to Michigan natives like taking trips ‘Up North,’ our love for euchre (and knowledge on how to pronounce it), and our notorious Midwestern accent.

Along with writing for online websites, Neelis has done her share of writing for print sources as well. While Neelis attended the University, she was a copy editor and writer for The Western Herald and was also a co-founder to WMU’s satirical newspaper The Black Sheep. She also founded the WMU branch of Her Campus Magazine; an editorial that won the national award for best on-campus publication.
