James Grepling (BS ‘81, Medicine: Physician Assistant) PA-C, received the first-ever PA-Patient Hero of the Year award at the American Academy of Physician Assistants Annual PA Conference. The award “recognizes exemplary service to patient care and the community and the contributions of remarkable people with in the profession.”
Melinda Moustakis (Ph.D. ’10, English: Creative Writing) has been nominated to the Shortlist for the 5th William Saroyan International Prize for Writing (Saroyan Prize) for her series of linked stories, Bearn Down, Bear North. The Saroyan Prize recognizes newly published works of both fiction and non-fiction and encourages new or emerging authors to honor the Saroyan literacy legacy of originality, vitality and stylistic innovation. Moustakis has previously received the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction.
Taylor Smith (BS ’78, Industrial Marketing) received the 2012 Outstanding NSIPA (National Society of Insurance Premium Auditors) Newsline Award for his article Made in Detroit. Currently, Smith serves as general manager and state audit manager in charge of supervising Michigan field auditors and physical audit review staff.
Joanne duBois Sweedyk (BS '09, Family & Consumer Sciences, Child Development) is the 2012 recipient of the Terri Lynne Lokoff National Child Care Teacher Award. Selected from a pool of applicants nationwide, Sweedyk cares for children from 6 weeks to 12 years at Joanne’s Tot Shop in Grand Rapids, MI. Award winners designed an enhancement project that illustrates the educational, social and emotional benefits for the children in their care. Sweedyk’s Natural Outdoor Environment for Learning and Exploration combines spaces for physical exercise, gardening, infant exploration and outdoor reading.
