Western Michigan University news and updates for December 12 – 18, 2014. This week’s campus photo features “The First On-Campus Ski Area in the U.S.” The 1968 Brown and Gold yearbook states:

After two and a half years of dreaming, planning and working, the Grand Opening of the Western Michigan Ski Area was finally scheduled. It included the National SkiDoo Show and Western’s own Boyne Mountain trained Ski Show… The Associated Press gave the area’s five slopes and two cross country trails national coverage, making it one of the biggest projects in Western’s “Route 68” success.

The area was designed mainly for the novice skier. It is totally student run, non-profit organization which makes it financially possible for every student to enjoy the sport of skiing. A season pass allows students to ski all season and take ski lessons at no additional charge.”
