Western Michigan University news and updates for May 15 – 21, 2015. This week’s campus photo features a sketch from the Alumni Magazine, 1939 vol.3. The article associated with the sketch is titled “Union Building Activities and Dormitory Life Begin,” referencing Walwood Hall. Cornelius (Mac) MacDonald was the manager for the new building, and reported that furnishings and equipment were making the building complete for occupancy.

Besides affording a dormitory for 115 women students, the building will also house the Women's League, the Men's Union, and the Student Council, and will furnish a social center for all students of the college. On the main floor of the Union building is a large General Lounge which opens into the lobby. The Women's League room, to be known as the Davis room in honor of Mrs. Bertha S. Davis, Dean of Women, will be located at the left of the main entrance, and is equipped with kitchenette, and storage space which will facilitate the serving for teas and other events given there.” (p.5)

Today, the Office of University Relations publishes a quarterly magazine, the WMU Magazine, but from 1938 – 42 it was called the Alumni Magazine. During that time, the University, then known as Western Teachers College, made the transition to Western Michigan College.
