A proud Western alumna, Janice’s innovative teaching strategies, which have engaged STEM students globally, recently earned her a nomination for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching from a colleague.

“Janice, you are a master teacher who has taught me how to be a better teacher for my students with an innovator's mindset and passion for personal and professional growth. We need more educators like you, and your efforts deserve recognition,” her colleague wrote in his nomination.

Janice has taught several grade levels in the Saginaw area and facilitated professional development opportunities for students and educators alike at local, state and national levels. She has extended her outreach to educators within the United Arab Emirates.

“I embody a growth mindset, continually striving to improve my teaching practices through professional development, collaboration with peers, and staying connected with the latest educational research,” she said.

Her journey in the education field began during her time at WMU, where she pursued connections and collaborations with other students within her field. “I cherished the numerous opportunities to connect with other aspiring educators. We were grouped together in almost all of our classes during the first two years, forming a close-knit community that had a lasting impact beyond the classroom,” Janice said. Kato in Costume

Bronco pride runs deep in Janice’s family. She pursued her bachelor’s degree as a legacy student here, following in both her parents’ footsteps. Her husband is also a Western alum, with a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences.

What stands out most for Janice in her career as an educator is the personal connection she creates with every student who comes through her classroom, where they are affectionately known as the “Kato Crew.” She constantly strives to create an environment where every student feels valued and inspired to grow.

“I have had the honor to hear from numerous students years later about the impact I had on them during their time in our classroom. Being a teacher isn’t just for one year, it’s for a lifetime, and every student who walks into the classroom can always count on me,” she said.
