Siems applied for a highly competitive Broadway management internship through the company Playbill. The internships typically are awarded to seniors and college graduates, but after an application and interview, Siems was offered the chance to intern in New York City.
“I didn’t think I had a chance when I first applied,” said Siems. “I was so surprised and excited when I found out that I actually got it!”
The excitement wore off when Siems faced a hard reality—that he might not be able to afford the opportunity.
Instead of giving up, Department of Theatre faculty turned to Theatre Guild Board of Directors for help. The Guild is a collection of patrons who supports scholarships, mentorships, and the professional development of theatre students, helping them pave their way in the professional world.
The board heard his story and awarded him a professional development scholarship to get him to New York.
“I’m so thankful for the financial assistance I received,” Siems said. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the generosity of the Theatre Guild and all who support it.”
Siems moved to NYC just after the New Year to start his internship with 3 2 1 Management. The company manages Wicked and will soon launch a new musical, If/Then.
“So far I’ve been shadowing the stage manager, learning organization strategies and working with actor contracts and unions,” he said. “I’m loving everything and making great contacts that will help me in my future career.”
Siems is taking classes online at WMU this semester, and is also working as an usher and in merchandise sales for the musical Aladdin on the side.
His dream is to someday work on Broadway as a company, house, or general manager and now— he’s off to a great start!
