A Powerful Mission

A Powerful Mission
Jeanne Powers (Master of Public Administration '77) is committing to something big. Beginning May 11, she will embark on a 3,415 mile journey— cycling all the way from LA to Boston on a mission.

That mission is to raise awareness and funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

"I believe with more research we can find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis— a life-threatening genetic disease that affects thousands of children and adults in the U.S.," Powers says.

The 68 year old resident of Haslett, Michigan is paying all of her expenses for the 50-day trip and any money she raises will go directly to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The journey was inspired by someone close, her great nephew Blair. He was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis as a baby and had a lung removed at only 2 years of age. Today, at 26, Blair lives his life with courage and faith. Powers commented that research has evolved to the point where medication benefiting people like Blair is not far from reality—and a little awareness and funding could go a long way.

Powers loves bicycling and has been on bike tours before, but not across the country from L.A. to Boston. She'll be updating followers on her progress via Facebook all the way.

Powers is still in training for the ride, but you can learn more about her or her mission, including a map of the trip, by visiting her website or finding her on Facebook—both links can be found below.
