The Holistic Health Care Program at WMU was one of the first programs of its kind in the nation—established in 1982. Since then the Program has innovated and evolved, responding to new discoveries in the discipline and to emerging health care trends.

In 2012, the program celebrates its 30th anniversary and a new name. The Integrative Holistic Health and Wellness program will continue that same tradition of innovation.

The Integrative Holistic Health and Wellness Program is one of only four similar higher education programs in the country, offering a graduate certificate and an undergraduate minor.

The new name, which was approved by the WMU Board of Trustees in late early 2012, better reflects the mission of the program, as health care has moved to a more integrative model.

Retaining the "holistic health" terminology provides for continuity of identity, since it has been affiliated with the program since its inception. "Wellness" is added to represent the concept of prevention, which is a core aspect of the program.

The program's updated mission is to cultivate the inter-connective relationships of individuals' body, mind, and spirit to positively enhance personal, professional, community, and global health.

Holism is a philosophy which considers the whole person within the larger context of the individual's life. The wisdom of holistic health honors the interdependent relationship between body, mind, spirit, and community.
