Invited by the President
WMU President John M. Dunn received a personal invitation from Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez to take part in the opening of a new Haitian university campus designed to serve 10,000 students.

The devastating earthquake that killed thousands of Haitians and destroyed the country’s infrastructure two years ago also had a profoundly negative impact on the educational infrastructure in Haiti—about 87% of higher education facilities were destroyed or damaged beyond functionality.

The new campus is part of the State University of Haiti, and is located in Cap-Haitien. It was built entirely by the Dominican Republic’s Government and private sector as a gift to the neighboring island.

There are more than 270 students from the Dominican Republic at Western Michigan University, and 45 WMU alums living in the Domican Republic—as the result of a partnership between WMU and the country.
