T. Christopher Gibson (BS '00, Elementary Education; MA '02) was recently named Teacher of the Year for Grand Prairie, a school district just outside of Dallas, Texas. "I competed against 24 other worthy teachers from the district. Now, I advance to the Regions finals and then the State finals. I credit my time at WMU for preparing me for this prestigious award. I especially would like to thank my mentor Dr. Lynn Nations Johnson for all of her guidance and support for me during both my undergraduate and graduate programs. I know the best is yet to come! Lauren Kerekes (BBA '95, Accountancy) has been named the recipient of the International Member of the Year Award by The Association of Women in Metal Industries. She currently serves as International Treasurer and member of the Columbus Chapter.
Thomas Manguem (BM '85, Vocal Performance) had the opportunity to perform with Yo-Yo Ma in front of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Manguem was performing as part of a Interfaith Service held at Holy Cross Cathedral after the Boston Marathon bombing.
Donald J. Para (BM '71, Public School Music; MM '72, Music), provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Cal State Long Beach, will become the university's interim president on July 1.
