Alsbro, with three other veterans, approached the Berrien County ISD (now RESA—Regional Educational Service Agency) in 2001 about gathering stories of local veterans to use as a tool for teaching history. They believed history was becoming a forgotten subject and wanted to share their wartime experiences with students to help them understand the importance of remembering.
Alsbro isn’t the only patriotic Bronco; Rod Kreiger (BS ’61 Business Education) and Lewis Burchard (BBA ’65, Business & MA ’70, Counselor Education & Counselor Psychology) are heavily involved in the functions of the organization.
The idea evolved, and three award-winning videos have since been produced — Lest We Forget WWII, Lest We Forget Korea, and Lest We Forget Vietnam. In addition to the videos, Lest We Forget provides the community with a variety of programs and services, including three books, WWII re-enactments, a library display, trips to Vietnam and veteran panels in schools have all come from the hard work of Lest We Forget.
With 250 members, the organization is a strong voice for the history of the US.
The organization’s next event is a WWII Re-Enactment on Friday, June 29- Sunday, July 1, in St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, MI. Highlights include European and Pacific Beach Landings, Ground Battles, a Hangar Show and Dance—and the famous flag raising at Iwo Jima.
