Eugene Thompson (BA '63, Education, Ed.D. '72, Educational Leadership) is currently the vice chair of the Arizona Early Childhood Development and Health Board (First Things First), appointed in 2007 by then Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Thompson has had an active 40-year career in education at both the K-12 and university levels as a principal, director of instruction, director of research, department chair, assistant dean, professor, and superintendent in locations throughout the country from Alaska to Alabama.

Since retiring from the Huntsville (Alabama) City Schools as superintendent, he has served as a consultant for the United States Department of State, Office of Overseas Schools in locations such as Harare, Zimbabwe, Nouakchott, Mauritania, Freetown, Sierra Leone, and numerous locations throughout Mexico, and Central and South America.

Recently, Thompson joined the National Institute for School Leadership in Washington, D.C., as a consultant, assisting in the development of training programs for superintendents and board of education members.

Thompson and his wife, Sandra McConnell, Ph.D., live in Prescott, Arizona with their three horses. They ride several days a week from their ranch into the Prescott National Forest.
