Taking a Bite

Taking a Bite
Vampires have been around since the 19th century and it doesn’t appear that they’ll ever die out of popular culture– but then again, they are immortal. Bronco alumna, Richelle Mead (M.A. ’01, Comparative Religion) has staked her claim to the immortal race with her six-part “Vampire Academy” saga.

Her novels chronicle the story of Rose, a half-vampire, training to be a bodyguard for her best friend, Lissa, a Moroi (good vampire). While learning how to protect the Moroi from the Strigoi (bad vampires), Rose finds herself in a forbidden romance with her instructor.

The Vampire Academy novels are intended for a young adult audience and have sold over 4.5 million copies as of December 2010. The series is a New York Times and USA Today best seller and has won honors from the American Library Association as well as been translated into 30 languages.

The series is also making its way into other forms of popular media. A graphic novel of the first book was published on August 23, 2011 and in June 2011, Preger Entertainment optioned the film rights to the entire series.
