The man who managed the reconstruction of the Lodge Freeway, and the construction of the award-winning I-94 Tied Arch Bridge has been nationally recognized for his contributions to advancing innovation and efficiency in the transportation industry.

Gregory Johnson received his Masters in Public Administration from WMU in 1991. He began working for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in 1989, rising through the ranks to become the Chief Operations Officer in 2009.

Johnson was honored as a "Modern-Day Technology Leader" during the 26th annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) luncheon in Philadelphia, in mid February. The award is sponsored by the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Lockheed Martin Corp., and U.S. Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine.

Johnson is a registered professional engineer and received his bachelors degree from U of M.
