Western Michigan University’s 42nd Homecoming game kicked off on Saturday, October 16, 1965.
The annual bonfire, snake dance, and mud bowl were featured in the 1966 Brown & Gold Yearbook. The Homecoming Jazz Concert, featuring Major Lance, The Shirelles, Mary Wells, and Jay and the Americans was also showcased.

The Broncos hosted Kent State for the 42nd Homecoming game at Waldo Stadium; and tied 10-10 in front of a record crowd of 18,500 fans. (Photo Caption: Steve Terlep barrels into the line to score the lone touchdown in a 10-10 tie with Kent.)
Susan Swan was crowned Homecoming Queen. Others in the court included Carol Martin, Barbara Bowes, Laura Marlette, and Kathy Murphy. On hand for presentation at most of the activities, these five western co-eds stood out as the finest representatives of groups on campus.)
Gwen Frostic (BA’29) was awarded the second Distinguished Alumni Award. She was the only awardee for 1965. At the time of her award; this statement was released:
“Ms. Frostic, once called "Michigan's Greatest Natural Resource," is known throughout the nation as author of over 15 books featuring her images of nature and her poetry.
She is the sole proprietor of "Presscraft Papers" in Benzonia. She holds honorary doctorate degrees from five colleges and universities and has been recognized from both state and national horticultural societies.”
