Dr. Ackley received masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan. He joined the economics faculty in 1940 and later was chairman of the President's council of Economic Advisors from 1964 to 1968 under president Lyndon Johnson.
In 1968, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Italy. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, one of his five books has been published in six languages.
