Dr. Cole began his career in Lansing as a legislative consultant and then worked for both the Michigan Department of Education and the state Senate.
He received masters and doctoral degrees from Michigan State University. After co-founding a management and communication consulting firm in 1978, he returned to government service and was named press secretary and later chief of staff for Michigan Governor James Blanchard.
In 1991, he became vice president of Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
