John S. Lore, B.S. '65

Dr. Lore also received master's and doctoral degrees from Western. In 1966, he became director of alumni relations at WMU.

He was appointed president of Nazareth College, Kalamazoo in 1975. In 1980, he was chosen to lead the Michigan Colleges Foundation. He joined St. John Health Corporation in 1986 and serves as its senior vice president.

A certified fund raising executive, he is recognized by his colleagues as a national spokesperson for philanthropy.

Renee Semo Hartz, B.A. '69

Dr. Hartz received a medical degree from Northwestern University in 1974 and following her internship and residency, joined the department of surgery faculty of that medical school. In 1982, she became only the 13th woman to be certified for thoracic surgery.

She was appointed head of the cardiothoracic surgery department at the University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics, Chicago in 1991. She has done extensive research into the prevention and treatment of heart disease in women.

Robert J. Ackerman, Ph.D. '79

Dr. Ackerman, who also earned a certificate from WMU's specialty program in alcohol and drug abuse, is recognized as the foremost authority in the nation on children of alcoholics.

He has written numerous books, the first of which was the first published in the United States on the topic. A professor and coordinator of graduate studies in the sociology department of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he co-founded the National Association for Children of Alcoholics.
