C. Bassett Brown, B.A. '48

Dr. Brown graduated from Meharry Medical School of Dentistry in 1953 and later earned a master of science in dentistry from Northwestern University.

He opened a practice in his hometown of Benton Harbor in 1958 and became known throughout the Midwest for his skills as an oral and maxillo-facial surgeon.

He has been a frequent lecturer at both national and international conferences and has published more than 50 articles in professional journals.

David C. Smith, B.B.A. '64

Mr. Smith joined the Chicago office of what is now known as KPMG Peat Marwick in 1964. He was elected to the firm's partnership seven years later and transferred to its Houston office in 1978 to head the tax department.

He was named vice chairman-tax in 1987 and is responsible for all policy matters related to the tax practice. A member of the firm's board of directors, he is also an active member of the Tax Foundation and the American Accounting Association.

Karla M. Gray, B.A. '69

Ms. Gray also received a master's degree from WMU. She earned a law degree from Hastings College of Law and practiced both corporate and private law for the next fourteen years.

She was an attorney for Atlantic Richfield and Montana Power companies. In 1991, she was appointed by the governor to the Supreme Court of Montana.

The following year, she was elected to a seat on the court and served as a member of the Gender Fairness Task Force.
