Dr. Bultman also earned a doctorate in educational leadership from WMU in 1971 and received a bachelor's degree from Hope College in 1965. He began his career as a teacher and coach, and later an assistant principal in the Portage (Mich.) Public Schools.
In 1968, he joined Hope College's faculty. During the next 17 years, he also served as a department chair, a dean and a coach at Hope College. In 1985, he was named president of Northwestern College in Iowa and during his 14 year tenure the college flourished.
On July 1, 1999, he assumed the presidency of Hope College
