David Wayne, '33

Mr. Wayne began his acting career in Cleveland's Shakespearian Repertory. After serving in the military during World War II, he began his Broadway acting career.

He received Tony Awards for his portrayal of Og in Finian's Rainbow in 1947 and for his role as Sakini in Teahouse of the August Moon in 1954.

In addition to his continuing Broadway career, he appeared in many movie including Adam's Rib and The Tender Trap. Throughout his career, he also had numerous roles in television.

H. Gardner Ackley, B.A. '36

Dr. Ackley received masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan. He joined the economics faculty in 1940 and later was chairman of the President's council of Economic Advisors from 1964 to 1968 under president Lyndon Johnson.

In 1968, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Italy. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, one of his five books has been published in six languages.

Homer Hartman Stryker, '16

Dr. Stryker received a medical degree from the University of Michigan. A respected orthopedic surgeon in Kalamazoo, he designed and made many of his own instruments as a hobby.

In 1936, he introduced a turned bed frame and, from a small shop in his basement, founded what is now the Stryker Corporation. He also introduced rubber heels for walking casts, a powered high-speed oscillating saw, and the circO-lectric bed. He received numerous awards including a Presidential citation.

Margaret E. Feather, B.A. '32

Ms. Feather served Western Michigan University for forty-nine years, first on the staff of the dean of mean and later as a financial aid counselor.

She was an active member of the Kalamazoo Commerce Club, the Community Concerts Association and the Kalamazoo Symphony Society.

She was honored by the National Federation of Republican Women for her leadership in area GOP activities. She was one of the original members of the WMU Foundation.

Merze Tate, B.A. '27

Merze Tate, B.A. '27

Dr. Tate is the author of six books on international and diplomatic affairs and a noted historian, researcher, university professor and philanthropist.

She graduated from Oxford University on 1935 and received doctoral degrees from both Harvard University, in 1940, and Radcliffe College, in 1941.

In 1951, she traveled to India as a Fulbright lecturer.
